Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea.

Coral reefs are extremely sensitive, biodiverse ecosystems that provide shelter and food for countless marine animals. Their abundance of fish is the livelihood of the coastal inhabitants. The beauty and diversity of the sea enchants millions of tourists every year.

Brutal fishing methods

Trawling puts corals at risk. Fishing with poison and dynamite will stun the fish or collect them dead. These "fishing methods" destroy entire coral reefs in one fell swoop.

Stronger El Niño phenomena

El Niño is a natural cycle of warming and cooling of the ocean. Coral bleaching results from warmer water temperatures over certain periods of time.

Devastating sewage and oil pollution

We humans are changing the quality of the water in the oceans and thus the living conditions of corals. Sewage and fertilizers also encourage the proliferation of crown-of-thorns starfish, which feed on hard corals.
